Yesterday we hosted Wiki Workshop 2023. This event brings together researchers exploring all aspects of Wikimedia projects. To celebrate the 10th edition of the workshop some changes were made, e.g., it took place as a standalone online event (not co-located with an academic conference) and submissions were 2-page extended abstracts in order to foster the participation of newcomers. Another relevant change was the creation of a developer track that I co-organized with Evelin Heidel (Wikimedistas de Uruguay) to create a deliberate and effective bridge between the Wikimedia research and developer communities. For this novel track, we scheduled three sessions:
- NLP in low resource languages led by Neechalkaran
- ProofreadPage: Expanding OCR capabilities in Wikisource led by Sohom Datta
- Web2Cit: Improving citation metadata on Wikimedia projects led by Diego de la Hera and Nidia Hernández.
The developers presented their projects and the existing challenges and then had an open conversation with Wikimedia researchers to explore together ideas and future work. In addition, I was excited to see that two extended abstracts that I co-authored were accepted for presentation:
- Deliberative Quality in Wikimedia Projects: Comparing RfCs on Meta, Wikipedia and Wikidata with Dylan Baumgartner and Cristina Sarasua.
- Controversies over Historical Revisionism in Wikipedia with Taehee Kim and David Garcia.
