International Conference on Computational Social Science 2017

From Monday to Thursday I was in Cologne for the 3rd Annual International Conference on Computational Social Science. This interdisciplinary event, held at the Maternushaus, is intended to bring academics, industry experts, open data activists, government agency workers, and think tank analysts to present and discuss recent work on computational social science. As usual, the organization of the event by GESIS was a synonym of success.

In my case, this edition was a perfect scenario to disseminate my current work supported by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness under the Maria de Maeztu Units of Excellence Programme (MDM-2015-0502) and the EU project D-CENT (FP7/CAPS 610349). First, I presented on Wednesday our recent analysis of how the release of conversation threading affected the structure of online discussions on Menéame and then, on Thursday, I explained our characterization of the online network organization of a movement-party in Barcelona. The whole conference (including tutorials, talks, and poster sessions) was ideal for meeting old and new colleagues, and for (re)discovering new valuable techniques for my ongoing research (e.g., topic modelling).
