Wiki Workshop 2025

This week, we hosted Wiki Workshop 2025, the main forum bringing together researchers exploring all aspects of Wikimedia projects (Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wiktionary, etc.). While the event remained virtual to maximize accessibility, it featured several new elements. Most notably, what had traditionally been a one-day event expanded to two days, allowing for better accommodation of participants across time zones.

On a personal note, after co-organizing the Developer Track in 2023 and the Wiki Workshop Hall in 2024, I took on a new role this year: Program Committee co-chair. This was my first time in this position in a research event, and the experience was incredibly rewarding. We maintained the same submission format as in previous years (two-page extended abstracts) and received 64 submissions. Of those, 48 (75%) were accepted and grouped into 10 themed sessions, with broad diversity in topics and Wikimedia projects. One session even focused on Sister Projects, highlighting research beyond Wikipedia and Wikidata. During that session, we presented our ongoing work, Wikidebate and the Shape of Public Spheres Online co-authored by Samuele Vallisa, Yelena Mejova, Andreas Kaltenbrunner, Kyriaki Kalimeri, and myself. We received very insightful feedback that will shape our next steps.

A thank you to all the participants who made this edition of Wiki Workshop a success ❤️
