Wiki Workshop 2024

We hosted Wiki Workshop 2024 yesterday. This is the largest Wikimedia Research event of the year, bringing together researchers who study all aspects of Wikimedia projects (Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikisource, etc.). In this edition we wanted to also bring Wikimedia developers, affiliate organizations, and volunteer editors interested in research. For that reason, after co-organizing the developer track in 2023, I co-organized with my colleague Kinneret Gordon the Wiki Workshop Hall for this new edition. The Hall is a novel space for researchers to connect with the Wikimedia Movement members and for the Wikimedia Movement to connect with Wikimedia researchers. Through this new track, we aimed to create a space for learning, exchange of ideas, the spark of curiosity, and community building.

The following session proposals were accepted for this first edition of the Hall:

  • Wikidata Quality Toolkit: Entity Schema Generator Demonstration
Odinaldo Rodrigues, Jongmo Kim, Bohui Zhang, Kholoud Alghamdi, Yiwen Xing
    (King’s College London)
  • Repurposing Public Archival Multimedia to Build Foundational Speech Data
    Subhashish Panigrahi (O Foundation)
  • Between Open Knowledge and GenAI: a decade-long academic journey with Wikimedia
Shani Evenstein Sigalov (Tel Aviv University)
  • Building the Wikimedia/Wikipedia Dataset: Challenges and Future Enhancements
Albert Villanova del Moral (Hugging Face)
  • Wikimedia Spain: Building Governance & Facing Knowledge Gaps
Rubén Ojeda and Pilar de la Prieta (Wikimedia Spain)
  • Crunching the new HTML page dumps
    Adam Wight (Wikimedia Deutschland)
  • Global Digital Compact: organizing a global advocacy campaign
    Costanza Sciubba Caniglia (Wikimedia Foundation)

In addition, the extended abstract “WiSCoM: Wikipedia Source Controversiality Metrics” which I co-authored with Jacopo D’Ignazi, Andreas Kaltenbrunner, Yelena Mejova, Michele Tizzani, Kyriaki Kalimeri and Mariano Beiro was accepted for presentation at the research track.

Again, thanks to all participants for contributing to the success of this edition of Wiki Workshop!
