International Conference on Web and Social Media 2024

Five years later I attended my first face-to-face academic conference and it was like coming home, as it was the AAAI International Conference on Web and Social Media (ICWSM-24). This edition was held in Buffalo (NY, USA) and it was the first time I presented there work done at the Wikimedia Foundation Research team. In particular, I gave a lightning talk on the dataset paper Language-Agnostic Modeling of Wikipedia Articles for Content Quality Assessment across Languages. This is the result of an internship of the PhD student Paramita Das (IIT Kharagpur) at the foundation with my colleagues Diego Saez-Trumper and Isaac Johnson. Using a language-agnostic article quality model, the dataset contains feature values and predicted scores of all revisions of all articles in the existing language versions of Wikipedia.

Attending ICWSM-24 was also very special, as my WMF colleagues Isaac Johnson and Martin Gerlach were also there for a Wikimedia Data Tutorial and 3 other peer-reviewed research papers, along with collaborators from our team and many old and new academic friends. Given the growing problems of accessibility to popular data sources for computational social science such as Twitter/X and Reddit, I look forward to more research on Wikimedia projects in the ICWSM community.
